Blues for an Alabama Sky by Pearl Cleage is a story taking place at the end of the Harlem Renaissance about the connection between dreaming and heartbreak, the strength of community, and the courage that it takes to stay true to yourself in a world that is built against you. The light in Blues should reflect a dreamlike quality in the most realistic way possible. There should always be a question of "Where is that beauty coming from? Can I go there? Can I see it for myself?" The dream that is just beyond the door frame, just beyond the windowsill, just on the other side of the street is what these characters are chasing.
